5 Breakout Stars of 2013

2013 was a crazy year for Hong Kong television, but here are 5 stars who I think have made a major breakthrough. This list consists of both newcomers and people who have been in the industry a long time but might have made a bigger jump in their career in 2013.

1. Chilam Cheung

Chilam has been in the industry for over 20 years and have had many successful songs and was also a big hit in a lot of the TVB series he participated in. He had another big breakthrough in 2013 when he portrayed Captain Cool in Triumph in the Skies II which led to a big boost in popularity, a new record deal, more acting opportunities, and an estimated $83 million which includes his many public appearances. He also won many awards such as the Best Actor in Malaysia and My Favorite Male character at the TVB awards. He is also planning to hold a concert at the HK coliseum in 2014.

Congratulations Yeung Chiu Hoi!

Yeung Chiu Hoi recently got married to his longtime girlfriend who he started dating when he was 17/18. When I first saw some of the pictures, I thought that he was just filming for a series because there were also a lot of TVB stars and I thought that he was too young. However, he's actually 29 years old! Congratulations to the newlyweds!

Fred Cheng and Hubert Wu at the Tung Wah Charity Show

Fred Cheng and Hubert Wu performed together with a violinist for the Tung Wah Charity Show. This is an annual telethon held by TVB to raise money for Hong Kong's Tung Wah group of hospitals. They raised $92,688,888 HKD which is  $2.3 million HKD more than last year's records. Congratulations!

 

I thought that they both sounded amazing. I love this performance.

Fred Cheng joins Voice Entertainment record label

Fred Cheng officially joins TVB's Voice Entertainment (the Chinese name sounds better because it directly translates to "stars dream") record label along with fellow Voice contestants Hoffman Cheng, Yao Bin, Ronald Law, and Grace Wong.

Here are some tidbits from the press conference:

• Fred's album will be released in May or June of next year. He hopes that one of the songs will be his own creation.
• Fred's first single will be written by Eric Kwok! He was one of the judges on The Voice of Stars and was nicknamed Ironman due to his resemblance to Ironman played by Robert Downey Jr.
• Jade Solid Gold (JSG), TVB's music countdown with performances, will go through some changes. The most notable was that JSG was usually only open to singers with TVB-contracts, but now it will be open to everyone.  

So happy for Fred! I will definitely be buying his album when it comes out. I hope there will be a duet with Alfred on his album since I loved their performance together during the competition. I'm actually somewhat surprised that so many of them got signed, but I guess I shouldn't be since they've been attending a lot of functions and doing a lot of performances together. I can definitely see Grace being pushed to do a lot of dance music since she's a great dancer.

Congratulations Fred Cheng!

First, I want to say congratulations to Fred Cheng on winning The Voice of Stars! It was a very well deserved win and he had many fantastic vocals and performances on the show. I've been a fan of his since I saw him on Shine on You and Love Bond and I knew that he was a good singer and guitar player since I saw a few youtube videos of him performing at a wedding. Though I knew he was talented, I didn't really expect him to blow up because he would get really small roles in series- not really even big enough to be considered a supporting actor. He was actually in Triumph in the Skies 2, but he only had about 2 scenes. When I saw his name for the first episode of The Voice of Stars, I knew that more people would know of him because of his voice, but I was pleasantly surprised when his popularity skyrocketed! He reminds me of a shyer Oscar Leung (who I also really like) who worked hard for 10 years before blowing up. I think that's why Oscar was rooting so hard for Fred- they were friends who started out at the same time and had the same career trajectory.

Anyways, here's Fred singing his last song before being announced as winner. I can only find audio since I'm sure any videos were taken down. He did a great job.

Next up for Fred? He is currently filming Midas Touch with Bosco Wong, Nancy Wu, Kate Tsui, and Sharon Chan. He also filmed a series presentation clip for Eye in the Sky in which he will portray a cop. We will also be hearing new music from him very soon since he will sing the theme song of The Verbal Side of Court with Kristal Tin. This is the Roger Kwok/Kristal Tin series that will be airing in December. Hopefully, we will be hearing news of a record deal very soon!

Fred Cheng

Fred Cheng is one of the competitors on Hong Kong's The Voice and he is definitely the breakout star. This past week he performed Angels and I got misty eyed by the end. Hope he gets a record deal!
