A Great Way To Care (Short Review)

*Spoilers so beware...

I just finished watching A Great Way to Care and it's not as bad as the other Marco Law produced series- Building Blocks of Life. That said, the series was just okay. Basically, Alex Fong plays a psychiatrist and Kate Tsui plays a cop and the story revolves around small cases that delve into the mind and psychology. In between all of this Alex and Kate start liking each other and become a couple but there's nothing that interesting about this pairing. *Major spoiler alert on the ending: They break up in one of the last episodes and so there is supposed to be a little awkward silence and so one of them asks if all they have to talk about is the different cases. Skip to the very ending and they are together and you know what they're talking about? Yup, another case. Uhh? What?

Kate's acting has improved in this series and even though she's the main female lead, the story revolves around Alex Fong. I think this is Kate's best look- with these cool boots and she looks really pretty in this series. I think she's better playing characters who are tough because she does make a pretty believable cop (even though I'm sure that most of them do not look like a Miss HK. haha).

The best and only good part I like about this series is Raymond Wong and Vivien Yeo. Okay, so I usually don't like it when people overact, but Vivien does in this series and kinda overacts her "cuteness" but it fits the character she plays. To me, she's very lovable and this is the first time I've liked her in a series. Once again, Raymond Wong steals the spotlight in this series even though he is just a supporting character. Raymond plays a somewhat geeky nurse who meets Vivien when she is overweight and depressed and he takes her in his care and help her get better. It's all very sweet and innocent- too bad they didn't give them more screentime because the series would have been a lot better with it. I think the best part of their pairing is that Raymond would have loved her no matter what she looked like and did see the beauty inside her. I hate other TVB series where someone transforms from an ugly duckling to a swan and that's the point when someone falls in love with them, and makes it seem like it is all about the looks.

Would I recommend this series? I say yes to fans of the leads or Raymond Wong. However for people who are more picky in watching their series I would tell them to wait for something else. If you do decide to watch it, just make sure that you do not watch Threshold of a Persona at the same time! I did, and since most of the supporting actors are the same, I was getting confused about the characters!

  5. Well i've only been watching it since it came
onto tvb in UK. I was hooked so went online to watch it, on ep18 now but i am disapointed its so short! Only 20 eps seems very short and I think doctor Ko and Monkey needs more scenes as a couple! I like how they did an overweight character as its very rare for chinese dramas to have that. This is prbably the best HK drama Ive seen that has hooked me, but saying that I dont watch many HK series. I do love a good police or medical drama! I vote more of dramas like this one and more "chinglish" actors like Monkey and Fai Mui :)

  6. Oddly enough I was vice versa - I couldn't stand Vivien's character especially after she got thin. Her voice really irritated my ears and I found their couple story slow. On the other hand I mainly watched the series to follow Kate's and Alex's story (cause I enjoy detective stories and have an interest in psychology.) I liked how those two were so independent and gung-ho and wasn't a wishy-washy couple. The ending for FAR too rushed and the time jump with little warning.

To answer the Author's Q, I think the point IS that they're talking about the case. They break up because of personality, both are too stubborn and loves their jobs too much. He says all they talk about is solving cases at the time because he wants her to give up the police job implying if she did maybe they'd have something else to talk about. The crux of the problem actually is because he's worried about her. The point at the end is that you're in charge of your own fate and not your personality. As his friends have made an effort to change, so has he. He accepts that she isn't going to give up the police, but actually it was her sparky strong police personality and more importantly her interest in the psychology of cases that made him fall for her in the first place.

  7. i am just like you except i didnt exactly watch kate tsuis part, only abit, i am a viven fan, strangely i have no idea why, so i watched this. I think her acting has improved, her chinese has gotten better, and her chemistry with raymond is amazing,
i REALLY REALLY hope that TVB can air this and not warehouse it, i dont think that would be possible cause there are so many current series to be aired, but this is definately a breakthrough role for her :)

That's hilarious because here in the US, TVB just started airing A Great Way to Care at 10:15p. Guess what drama they're airing at 8:30-9:30p. Yep, Threshold of a Persona! It will be tough for my mom, whose memory isn't that great in the first place. Two dramas back-to-back with the same supporting cast will confuse her to no end...

BTW, I wonder who chooses the English titles. "Threshold of a Persona" doesn't make any sense in English; it's pretentious gibberish. Since I don't understand Chinese, I don't know if the English title has anything to do with original words.
