TVB Plans for the new year

I was reading this article and I thought it was very good read. Mingpao got an exclusive with the Program Arrangement Strategic Planner and Production Department Vice-Director (Mr. Ho Koon Chung) about their upcoming plans for TVB and the different broadcast periods. Here are some highlights:

They are planning to broadcast Tiger Cubs (Joe Ma, Jessica Hsuan) starting in June on the weekends. There are 13 90-minute episodes which will be broadcasted on Sundays first and then in July it will begin to be on both Saturday and Sunday. This series is a big investment because each episode cost almost $10 million HKD to make.
They have lined up some series to go along with the 4 seasons.
The Romance season will coincide with Valentine's Day and they will air 4 in Love.
The Off Season is in May and June and since it is an off season, they are planning to air some of their stronger series to get some high ratings. This will include The Boxing King (Kevin Cheng, Raymond Wong) and House of Harmony and Vengence (Bobby AuYeung, Myolie Wu, Linda Chung).
The Summer season revolves more around the younger audience since they are on break and Return of the Three Kingdoms (Raymond Lam, Kenneth Ma, Tavia Yeung) is planned.
TVB Anniversay Season- Some tentative plans have been made but they have not been revealed yet.
Mr. Ho said that he did hear some complaints about series not being broadcast in better time slots, and he admits that there are some weaker time periods. However TVB produces series non stop and he has confidence in the series to do well. Also, TVB is international so even if there are less TV viewers in Hong Kong, there are still many other ways that people watch series. There have been more clicks on myTV and through Mainland streaming sites so HK viewers are not very accurate since there are many ways to watch series now.

I also thought this quote was very interesting.

TVB's Mr. Ho calmly said: "It is good that there are new competitors, the industry can have a hundred flowers bloom and bring in new strikes. However, please don't 'wear the same pants', steal the same group of artists and shoot the same type of TV programs. The same productions method is not a blessing to audience. (This year, will TVB have to watch out in the battle, as there are new competitors?) In fact, we have long term arrangements for our programs. We also have the flexibility to make changes, it could change by the day and it's not difficult, but actually its a question of will the change be positive or negative? [We] have to consider this. More importantly, we want to pursue stability. TVB employs many skilled and experienced behind-the-scenes crew and we are an old company, so we seek 'within the stability, seek breakthrough and improvement'."

I thought that this was very informative and shows their thought process. I agree that the TV ratings does not accurately reflect the ratings of a series since there are so many more ways to watch series now. I don't think they'll get super high ratings for series because of this reason. It's the same in the U.S. because tv viewership has gone down and the average ratings have dropped as well too.

I think there might be a little bias in picking their anniversary series but I don't think that they give series bad time slots on purpose. They want their ratings to do well so they must have some confidence in a series to do well, even in unfavorable time slots. It happens to everyone so I don't get the whining about it.

Also, I thought the last quote was funny because it was a pretty good dig at their competition. It's true that they're trying to copy their style but I don't think they'll succeed. ATV tried to do the same thing by paying more money to get TVB stars but it still didn't help their ratings. Basically, why would people watch a copy cat when they can watch the real thing?

Myolie Wu Star Talk Interview

This is an interview that Myolie did with TVB a few days ago, before she left to go to China to film. She talks about her award reactions and a little about her relationship with Bosco. In every TVB interview, they mention that they've been dating for 7 years. It seems like an open secret within TVB since some of their friends had to interview and question them about their love life, even though they know the real truth all along. 7 years means that they started dating while filming the first War of In Laws?

Myolie Wu and Kevin Cheng- Happy New Year (Updated)

Both Myolie Wu and Kevin Cheng had a good 2011 which ended with them taking Best Actor and Actress at the TVB awards. After winning, they had more commercial and promotional offers as well filming opportunities. Myolie is currently in Mainland filming for The Feast and she has also received many other Mainland scripts. She does not mind taking on more filming opportunities since Triumph in the Skies 2 does not start filming until May. Kevin will also continue to develop in both Hong Kong and China. He is currently filming Hero in China with Michael Tse.

I watched the last I Love HK movie and although it wasn't great, it was still entertaining and nice to see all the TVB artists in it.

Kate Tsui seemed to have a good year with 5 series being aired, but she is not very lucky in the love department since there were rumors of her having an affair with Ron Ng. Raymond Lam won a bunch of music awards and earned a lot of money, but was also hit with the scandal of the released bed pictures of him and his ex-girlfriend. For the new year, they both wish to get rid of the bad luck and have a good dragon year.

L'escargot Promo Event

The cast of L'escargot had a promo event to celebrate their new series together. They had an average rating of 27 points, with a high of 33 for the scene where Oscar Leung slapped Mandy Wong.

Michael Miu is happy with the series and said that a lot of people have started calling him by his name in the series. He will soon head out to Las Vegas with Eric Tsang for a show and will try his luck at the gambling tables.

Linda Chung is happy for the chance to collaborate with Michael Miu.

Myolie Wu and Johnson Li

Wish and Switch with Myolie Wu is currently airing in which she switches lives with Selena Li's character. Even though this series is airing during the Chinese New Year time, she is not worried about ratings and instead hopes that everyone likes this drama.

When asked who in real life Johnson would like to switch lives with, he jokes and says Bosco! He would use the opportunity to ask Myolie out. Myolie would want to be Johnson because she finds him very funny. This is also the first time Myolie is pairing up with Johnson Li and she supports Johnson Li to be the next "housewife killer."

If there really is a site in which you can exchange things, she would wish for Kibby Lau's body.

I like Wish and Switch so far. It's a funny, light-hearted series and the cast is doing a good job. I do think it probably took too long for Myolie and Selena to switch bodies which might be why ratings went down the 2nd week. However, a lot of people do seem to enjoy it and that's all that matters. Also, it's ranked #1 on tvb.com and Selena, Tina, Vincent and Myolie hold 4 of the 5 top spots on the artist rankings right now.

Michael Miu is the main lead but he is still filming in China so he will not make it to the blessing ceremony. The cast includes Elaine Ng, Raymond Lam, Ella Koon, Kate Tsui, MC Jin, Ben Wong, Law Lok Lum, Derek Kwok, Raymond Tsang, Jazz Lam, and many others.

I believe that Michael Miu and Elaine Ng are paired up together as well as Raymond Lam and Ella Koon. I'm not sure if the storyline will be the same as the sales presentation clip but Kevin Cheng and Roger Kwok will not be filming this series. I'm looking forward to this- I was excited when I watched the sales clip and the cast changes seem interesting.

Bosco Wong and Niki Chow at a mall event

Bosco Wong and Niki Chow were at a mall event the other day (which I think is pretty funny since Myolie and Kevin had an event together the day before. hehe) and they each received a kiss from a small kid. They were also told to feed each other apples which led Niki to feel embarrassed but Bosco did not have a problem and obliged. Bosco disclosed that he would like a boy and girl in the future but he has no plans currently to have kids.

The event organizers also led out 3 guys in a Raymond Wong, Moses Chan, and Michael Tse (her former and current co-stars) and asked Niki who her ideal guy was. She declined all 3 of them and said that 2 of them are married and 1 had a significant other. She would never want to be a third party.

Also, Bosco was at another event and asked about the prostitution rumors. He joked and said they didn't need to do that and that he would give her money if she wanted and found the rumors funny. (This is a cute clip. I like how Bosco jokes around when he has to answer silly rumors.)

Many TVB artists attended the wedding and some of them were even part of her bridal party such as her good sisters Linda Chung and Vivien Yeo. When asked if they're planning for a baby right away, Ricky and Charmaine said that it is not in their immediate future since they want to have some alone time together first, but they might try in a year or so.

Current Scandals and Rumors

1. This first one is from Sudden Weekly which is Hong Kong's version of National Enquirer and Globe, which means that they are trashy and have very little truth to it. It's saying that there is a prostitution ring which involves an actor acting as a pimp for his girlfriend who is also an actress. They use a phone card to communicate with their clients to see who is interested and describes the girls for sale such as a "leggy beauty at TVB" and a "goddess with a 36D figure". The names are blurred out but then they use pictures of rumored and official couples as some possible suspects.

It's pretty obvious that it's not any of these people because none of them are actually accused but they just wanted to use some famous names to get some more interest in this news story and sell more copies of the magazine. A few years ago, there was a scandal involving a "salty pork hand" at TVB and the gossip magazines featured a lot of leading TVB actors such as Kenneth, Raymond, Ron, Steven, and Joe Ma even though the description did not fit him. They even put Bosco as one of the suspects even though one of the clues was that the culprit was taller than him! Also, if they are making that much money, they would not be slaving away at TVB since all the lead actors and actresses are basically there from morning to night. If this story is true, it is most likely an actor and actress who is not super famous. (I believe the real/rumored culprit for the salty pork hand is Ellesmoire Choi since he was seen going into a "secret" meeting and then he has not been seen since.) They make the big money by making an appearance at events, not by being prostitutes. Check out the ihktv interview- there's a lot of pictures of TVB artists you may recognize mixed in with a bunch of nobodies.

More scandals and rumors

2. A lady on Weibo is claiming to be a broker for Myolie Wu and Kingdom Yuen's filming in Mainland China. She claims that she is not getting paid for her work which should be a 10-15% fee and slams the 2 artists. She is posting emails as proof, which is just emails of her contacting their managers (Myolie's manager is Fornia and her email is listed on her weibo page). Myolie clarified that she has not communicated with the accuser and only knows her as Kingdom's friend and does not know why there is this rumor. She also said that all work is arranged by her management.

If this lady is real, then it is really unprofessional of her to slam the artists who usually is not the one arranging work for themselves. That is the job of their manager since that's why they're getting paid for. Perhaps the lady had a breakdown in talks with their managers and that's why she's getting mad and decided to drag their names in the dirt as retaliation? She realizes that people will pay more attention if she accuses the artist directly. Also, if this was true, it would have been easier for her to go to a lawyer and sue instead of yelling at someone on weibo. That just makes it suspicious. Either way, I don't see how this is Myolie's fault- I believe that she is telling the truth since the managers arranges work for their artists.

eta: The broker has now clarified on her weibo that the situation with Myolie was just a misunderstanding and her agent has now clarified the issue to her. She admires Myolie's professional attitude. However, the situation with Kingdom Yuen has not been fixed.

Wow. that broker is really horrible. She should talk to them before smearing people on her weibo. It's obvious that her main problem was with Kingdom and she used Myolie's name to get the media's attention. Ugh.

3. Fala Chen is rumored to have been married since 2008 and her husband gifted her with a mansion in Georgia in the U.S. Fala clarified on her weibo that the mansion was not a gift although she didn't respond to the marriage rumors.

The mansion is rumored to cost $560,000 US dollars which is really a good deal! I think it is very believable that she could have got the house herself since she could have easily made the down payment. She is currently one of the top fadans at TVB and although they don't pay that much, she has endorsement deals and appears at a lot of functions. If she was just living off her husband's money, she would not need to work that hard since he's really rich. Also, even if he did pay for it, so what? If they are married, he can give her whatever he wants to.

4. Jessica Hsuan (see below posts)

Jessica is headstrong and willing to speak her mind. However, some view that as her being a diva. If Jessica was a guy, no one would think twice about any of her actions, but she's expected to be meek and just nod along to everything just because she's a female.

The main reason I wanted to make this post is because I think it's really hard to be a female in the entertainment industry. If you date someone richer, you are labeled a gold digger, but if you date someone with less money, they would say that you're dating someone beneath you. They are also constantly attacked because they think they wouldn't speak up for themselves. Also, tabloid items about females tend to sell more than male oriented news pieces. That's why they're always pitting fadan vs fadan but rarely anything about male artists fighting with each other. Guys definitely have it easier in the entertainment industry. What do you think?

Jessica Hsuan Radio Interview

Jessica Hsuan was recently involved in a scandal in which she was accused of being a diva and hard to work with while filming in a series in China. Jessica shot back and released a statement about the "7 Deadly Sins" while working there. You can read more about it at Jaynestars, but she also went on a Hong Kong radio station to clarify more about what happened. It's known that Jessica is known for going to work on time and just expects her coworkers to do the same, and that's why there are so many rumors about her being hard to get along with. I think she's also not afraid to speak her mind, which we should all applaud her for since a lot of people may view females as weak and quiet. I'm on her side on this one. She would not have even said anything if one of her co-stars did not try to smear her.

Tina Shek

19 year old Tina Shek can currently be seen in both TVB dramas that are currently airing- L'escargot and Wish and Switch. She plays Ron's younger sister in L'escargot while she has a bigger role in Wish and Switch as Angela Tong's daughter and Myolie Wu's niece. She praises them as friendly and willing to help her out with her acting.

I really like Tina! She first captured people's attention as the young prostitute Yoyo in Lives of Omission and I think she has a lot of potential and I see a lot of improvement in Wish and Switch already. Also, I think she looks a lot like Nancy Wu. They could be sisters!

Fashion Showdown- Battle of the Capes

Sheren Teng recently wore an all black outfit complete with a cape to the TVB Anniversary Awards. Hong Kong actress, Cherrie Hung, was also seen recently at a Mont Blanc event wearing a cape outfit. Check out the pictures below. Who do you think pulls off the look better?

To me, I liked Sheren's whole look more. It looked more complete with her slicked back ponytail and she gave off the impression that she was a strong female, which she is. Cherrie looks good too but she also looked like she was wearing a costume. I'm also not a fan of the big red embellishment.

Miss Chinese International Event

Some of the judges have been announced for the Miss Chinese International pageant and that includes TVB stars Myolie Wu, Michael Tse, Jason Chan, and Astrid Chan as well as EEG singer William Chan (based on the bottom picture). Hacken Lee, Mag Lam, and Alfred Hui have been announced as performers. I think it's also rumored Raymond will perform?

Fala Chen married in 2008?

There have been rumors for a while now that Fala Chen is actually married to Sit Sai Hang, who is the heir to Neway Entertainment. Next Magazine is reporting that they have been married since 2008
and that he gave her a 40,000 square feet mansion with seven bedrooms, six bathrooms, a billiard room, a large garden, and a pool. (via ihktv)

I think they probably are married but don't want to admit it yet, not that there's anything wrong with that. These rumors have been around for a long time and all the tabloids pinpoint 2008 as the year they got married. At that time, Fala was getting bigger roles and she probably didn't want it to affect her career, since she wanted the focus to be on her acting and not her personal life. She is improving as an actress but I do think a big stumbling block is that she lacks any great romantic chemistry with any her partners. There is probably a lot of pressure on her since she is in such a high-profile relationship, and it seems like she's afraid to get too close to any of her co-stars. Myolie Wu's busy day

Myolie Wu had a busy day today. First, she started out early in the morning to help represent TVB for a charity walk. Then, she went to a promotional event before heading out to to promote her new series, Wish and Switch. The previous night, she went to Bosco's mom's 60th birthday party.

Myolie and Sharon Chan pose together for the Walk for A Million charity event. They were there to represent TVB along with some other artists.

Then, Myolie attended the Sunshine City "Splendid Art Spring Festival" event dressed in red.

Afterwards, she attended an event to help promote her current series, Wish and Switch. Her and Johnson Li sang the theme song from that series.

2011 Music Awards

I am actually not very familiar with the Hong Kong Music Industry since I do not live in Hong Kong, so I mainly know songs by TVB-associated artists. That's why I can't really judge how deserving any of these awards are, but I did want to compile them all together in one post.
-There are 4 main music awards. The Chik Chak 903 awards are mainly based on radio airplay on their station. The Metro awards give out the most awards and seems like it mainly gives them out as a form of engouragement. The RHTK awards are a mix of radio airplay and fan and critic voting. The JSG awards are sponsored by TVB and since they have been in a dispute with some record labels, their artists have been shut out from the awards. They finally came to a compromise but they were too late to compete.
-Most of these awards are based on attendance and if an artist does not show up, they are most likely not to receive an award.
-The newcomer scene is mainly dominated by Alfred Hui (contestant of The Voice season 1), Mag Lam (winner of The Voice season 2), and Joyce Cheng (daughter of Lydia Sum and Adam Cheng and she also acted in a few TVB series). Congrats to all of them. All 3 of them have really good voices. There is no clear cut winner between the 3 of them since each of the 4 main music awards gave out different results. Chik Chak ranked them Alfred, Mag, and Joyce. RHTK ranked them Joyce, Mag, and Alfred. Metro split them up between male (Alfred) and female (Mag and Joyce shared the award). JSG also split them up so Alfred received gold for the males while Mag got gold and Joyce got silver for the females.
-I already bought Mag Lam's cd but after listening to Joyce and Alfred singing their songs on the award shows, I ordered their cds.

Sally Yeh returned to the TVB stage to sing one of her classic songs (and present an award) and she was amazing. Not only did she look great, she also sounded great and kept up with all the dancing. It's hard to believe that she's 50!

War and Beauty 2 Updates

The confirmed cast for War and Beauty 2 includes Sheren Teng, Ada Choi, Moses Chan, and Astrid Chan as seen in the trailer. The latest addition is Christine Ng. I am so happy for her because I think she is really underrated as an actress and am glad that she will take part in such a grand production. Elaine Yiu also confirmed in another interview that she will also take part, so that makes her one of the additions from the younger generation. I believe Kenny Wong is also confirmed since Producer Chik likes to use him. Some of the people from the original cast that is not returning includes Gigi Lai, Maggie Cheung, Charmaine Sheh, and Bowie Lam. I'm sure that people will be sad that the entire cast will not be back to film the sequel, but I think the most important return that they could have gotten is Sheren Teng so that's why I'm okay with the cast change. I wonder who else they will add to the cast? I think they have enough heavyweight female actresses so I wonder which actors they will get to fill the cast. Other than Elaine, what other younger actresses will they add? Christine Kuo was featured in the sales presentation but the last time she participated in an ancient series (Life and Times of a Sentinel), they ended up dubbing her voice. Is there anyone you want to see added to the cast?

Linda Chung still filming while sick

Linda Chung and Cilla Kung were on the streets of Hong Kong filming their latest series, Dangerous Protection, even though Linda was sick and coming down with a fever. She took a lot of Vitamin C to keep her immune system up and you could see her resting her eyes during the down time. I hope she feels better soon!

*These stats have been taken from Wikipedia. This does not include the half-hour sitcoms.

Notes:
-The series in red are ones that aired at the 8:30pm time slot and the series in blue aired at 9:30. It seems like an advantage to be aired at the later time slot.
-The general ratings may be down from previous years but a big factor is due to people watching these shows online including TVB's official streaming site: MyTV.
-No wonder TVB is planning a bunch of sequels next year. The highest rated series of the year was an indirect sequel and the 2nd highest rated is a spinoff of a popular character. The Rippling Blossom is the highest rated original series, and it aired around Chinese New Year.
-Forensic Heroes 3 and Curse of the Royal Harem had the highest peak with 43 points each.
-If you look at the ratings, it's no surprise that Myolie Wu won the TV Queen award. All of her series for 2011 ended up in the top 5. Congratulations!
-There are 3 sequels planned from the 2011 series. Ghetto Justice 2 finished filming, Miss Koo (a spinoff from Yes Sir, Sorry Sir) is currently being filmed, and there are plans for a sequel for The Other Truth.
-A Great Way To Care was originally warehoused and released overseas, yet it still produced good ratings and finished in the top half.

Bottled Passion and When Heaven Burns Ending Thoughts

Spoilers:
I'm not going to give an in-depth review of each of these series, but I did want to give my final thoughts on them.

I really liked Bottled Passion. It had a good story and it kept me excited to watch each episode. I also thought that there were some good performances by Raymond Wong, Elaine Yiu, Jack Wu, and Rebecca Chan. I liked the love story they were trying to set up, although I am one of the few who was rooting for Niki to end up with Jack.

When Heaven Burns had an interesting concept but I don't think it was well executed and it left me bored a lot. It's not that I thought this series was too deep- it wasn't, since I get all the concepts and the story it was trying to tell. I just thought it was too slow paced and it would work better as a movie. From a shallow standpoint, Charmaine looked great in this series from her hair to her makeup to her clothes.

The ending of one the series was really well done and touching, while the other left me cold. Suprisingly, I hated the ending for Bottled Passion and I really liked the ending for When Heaven Burns. Bottled Passion should've just ended at episode 20, and not because that would've meant that it ended on a happy note. I don't mind tragic endings, but I really hate stupid ones. Basically, a suicidal Elaine stabs Raymond, and he rushes out of the building and tells someone to go help her. Instead of waiting for help or going to the doctor, he wanders from day to night time and no one notices his blood dripping from his stomach? The only person who sees him is Jack who goes to get help, but when he returns, Raymond is gone since he walks to the pier to set himself to wander away on a boat. He basically didn't want to die in front of Niki, so instead he wants to give her false hope that he is alive and let her wait forever for his return? That is so lame, especially since he had a chance to be saved if he just went to the hospital! I've read a bunch of theories of why Raymond didn't go to the hospital such as he wanted to pull one last magic trick to disappear since he didn't want Niki to be sad, but isn't it worse to not let her mourn him? The producer obviously wanted to portray Niki waiting for Raymond like how he waited for her but there are so many better ways to do so instead of dragging out Raymond's death for a whole episode. He could've been kidnapped, had amnesia, any of those cliched endings would've been better than a stupid one.

The last episode of When Heaven Burns, on the other hand, was really well done. Some of it was a little typical with everyone getting their retribution and it was corny how Bowie died saving a kid's life who shared the name of the friend he ate, but I also thought it was a very complete ending. I really hated the sub-theme song sung by Bowie, Moses, and Kenny but then my mind completely changed when they were coming up with the song together and then they played it at the rock show with their younger selves. I also liked how Charmaine imagined a "what if" scenario if she made one different decision.

Basically, I was tearing up watching the last episode of When Heaven Burns even though I didn't even care about the series, while I was just irritated at the ending of Bottled Passions.

The cast of Wish and Switch held their first promotional event where they all got dressed up in costume. I'm excited to watch this series mainly because of the cast. I think it's an interesting combination with Myolie Wu and Selena Li as the leads and I believe it's also the first time for Johnson Li as a male lead.

Thoughts: I'm excited to see this series because of Wayne- I think he excels more in more character based roles. Other than Wayne, it'll be interesting to see him interact with Michelle and Maggie. I'm also excited to see Nancy, Raymond, and Oscar Leung. The headpieces look really high, although their hairstyles look easier to prepare compared to other ancient series. Also, I always thought that Aimee and Christine Kuo looked alike but I really thought that it was Christine and not Aimee in the pictures!

Kevin Cheng and Myolie Wu attended an event for the opening of a new store. Myolie clarified that she is not pregnant and only went to see a Chinese doctor for traditional Chinese wedding. If she were to get married or have a baby, she will then let people know. Kevin joked that she is better off since she is at least dating and she suggested that he can always beat her to the alter by having a "flash" wedding.

The below are currently some of the official couples at TVB. Both of the people either currently film for TVB or have worked for them in the past few years. There are probably more couples out there but these are the only ones I can think of offhand. I didn't include any rumored couples since there are probably many people in TVB that are dating that no one knows about. As you can see, most of these relationships started on set!

Aimee Chan and Moses Chan- They started dating when they were filming War at Heart. In the beginning, Moses admitted that he was pursuing her although he said they were taking things slowly. They were often caught entering and leaving the same premises and Evergreen Mak exposed that Aimee did bring her boyfriend (Moses) to see her making them an official couple. Now, they take the opportunity to make a lot of extra money since they get invited to a lot of promotional events together.

Myolie Wu and Bosco Wong- They have been rumored together since War of In Laws because they had very cute chemistry together. For years, there was a lot of gossip about their relationship since he was rumored to have sent Myolie hundreds of SMS messages and there were many pictures of them together, including pictures of them going on vacation and paparazzi pictures of them together in his apartment. They maintained that they were just good friends, although they have been more open in the past year or so since Myolie admitted to giving him a diamond earring for his birthday and he admitted that she was one of two people who he told about his plans to open a restaurant in Malaysia. Myolie finally openly declared her relationship with him in her Best Actress speech. So cute!

Mimi Lo and Power Chan- They have often been paired together in TVB series and it was during the filming of Lofty Waters, Verdant Bow that Mimi took the initiative to chase after him! She is the more outgoing one but she was attracted to how serious Power was about his work. After a month of dating, Mimi suggested that they move in together to be closer to work and they got married in 2009.

June Chan and Jack Wu- They dated for 7 years before they got married in 2009 and they currently have one daughter. You should watch this clip where they talk about their relationship. June's health was deteriorating during their relationship and she felt bad that Jack always had to take care of her. Jack thought it was his own fault since she was very healthy before their relationship and wasn't sure if it was because of his pets. I'm happy to hear that they are both very healthy.

Michael Miu and Jamie Chik- They have been married for over 20 years and met during the filming of a TVB series. Due to personality clashes, they broke up with each other for a little while before they eventually reunited, got married, and had 2 kids. I think I read an article where Michael Miu once admitted that there was a third party in their relationship although he didn't say who cheated, but they are now happily together.

Roger Kwok and Cindy Au- They met in Korea (where I assume they were doing work for TVB) and they dated for 7 years before deciding to get married. They have a daughter together and I don't think Cindy has any plans to go back to TVB. Roger is still contracted with TVB although he also spends some time away filming in China.

Leanne Li and Wong Cho Lam- Although there were other rumors of Wong Cho Lam with taller women such as Ada Choi, it was still surprising when it was exposed that he is actually dating Wong Cho Lam! They were caught holding hands by the paparazzi and the next day, they confirmed that they were dating. Cho Lam would often teach her english while also pursuing her. It's rumored that he went to visit her parents in Canada recently to let them know his intentions to marry her so I won't be surprised if they end up getting married soon.

Yoyo Chen and Vincent Wong- They were often photographed together in intimate moments. First, there were poolside pictures of them kissing and then there were other pictures of them living together. They recently got married and she is also 3 months pregnant.

I don't think Aimee has the best style sometimes but she looked very cute that day. Her dress was pretty but she also kept it casual with the addition of the pockets.

My favorite cover is:

I like that it was an original photoshoot of most of the TVB artists that were available and I like how they had a fake tattoo of their name on their body. Some people had better pictures than others but I thought it was an interesting concept. They should really use these pictures and put together a calendar! I miss those.

My other favorites are: (in no particular order)

-Any cover with Myolie and Kevin together- their poses are quite sexy and it shows that they are very comfortable around each other.

-Nancy Wu: Cover Girl- It looks like a fashion magazine cover.

-Tavia and Ruco- They look very cool.

-The cast of Forensic Heroes and the cast of When Heaven Burns- I like their group shots together.

2011 Series Review

Below is my quick judgement on all the series released in 2011 by TVB. I'm not going to give a synopsis, so I'm just assuming that you know the basic plot for everything. I have actually watched every series that they released so far, but I don't necessarily give my review by comparing them to each other. I do have my own biases and preferences so take that into consideration if you read this. Also, beware of spoilers. I try not to give anything big away but there might be some plot points spoiled.

7 Days In Life: This series started out strong but I think the 7 days concept for this series was too limited to stretch out to 20 episodes. Only some of the characters were interesting so when it focused on others, I found myself really bored. My favorite scenes involve Bosco and Joyce (who may not be the best actress but is very cute in this role). I found Steven Ma's character to be really annoying (even though he had a motive) and didn't really find him believable as this playboy type.

Rest of the 2011 Series-

A Great Way To Care: I am not a fan of series with Alex Fong in it because I usually find his characters really boring. It was interesting to see a cop series which uses the help of a psychiatrist to help solve their cases, but in general, I was pretty bored. The bright spots would have to be the supporting characters since I really like Ram Chiang and Raymond Wong and his relationship with Vivien Yeo.

Be Home For Dinner: The problem I have with these long sitcom series is that they don't seem to really plan out the complete storyline and it gets really draggy. I liked some characters such as Yvonne Lam, Kristal Tin, and Stephen Au and I would like when episodes focused on them but there was also a lot of episodes I didn't care for.

Bottled Passion: I thought this was a very entertaining series. Raymond Wong did a very good job here, although I'm not sure I was a great fan of his character. I was rooting for Niki to be with Jack Wu in the series, mainly because Raymond kept treating her horribly even though he didn't really have to. Also, I can't really sympathize with his character because he was trying to get revenge on his adopted family, even though the father was innocent but still got hurt in the crossfire. Also, the ending was pretty bad- not because I don't like sad endings, but because it was so unreasonable! Basically, for a good ending, you can just stop at episode 20 and not watch 21. Overall, I would definitely recommend this series because it was very good as a whole.

Curse of the Royal Harem: I actually think this is the best series of the year from a storytelling standpoint. When you finish watching the series, you will realize that they laid a great foundation for why everything happens and why it ended the way it did. Each actor and character, whether they were leading or supporting, had it's own little storyline and had a shining moment in the series. Though many of them had a tragic ending, every death had a meaning and they didn't kill of characters just for dramatic effect. My favorite parts include the relationship between Myolie and Joel, Sunny and Jessica, and KK Cheung and Gigi Wong.

Forensic Heroes 3: I have to begin by saying that I am biased because I really liked the first 2 series and I couldn't help but compare this installment to the first one. I tried not to since I am a big fan of Wayne but the series was just very weak to me. There is no chemistry between Wayne and Maggie or the whole cast in general. The cases were predictable and it also made the cops look stupid since the forensic team basically did all the work for them and had to clue them in on everything. Nancy was one of the shining part of this series and played a very complex character well, as well as having fantastic chemistry with Wayne. I might not have thought this series was that great, but obviously a lot of people disagreed with me since it has the highest ratings of the year.

Ghetto Justice: This is probably my favorite series of the year. It had interesting characters and cases and those cases also moved the story along. The scenes between the 4 main guys were funny and Kevin and Myolie had great chemistry as well. I think one of the main things I liked about this was the unusual casting (such as Jazz Lam as a refined gentleman instead of the loud gangster type and Kevin Cheng not being a Prince Charming) and the interesting pairings (such as Jazz and Joyce). I wish more series would take chances in their casting.

Grace Under Fire: I thought that Liu Xuan did a pretty good job for leading her first series. The story starts out pretty slow but picks up towards the end but I don't think the series itself was very memorable because I can barely remember anything about it! I did like Fala and Bosco's pairing in this though.

Home Troopers: I actually really liked this series and I'm probably one of the few people who was happy that Liza got into the Top 5 for the Best Actress nominees for this role. She played a very convincing role as a housewife who is sometimes viewed as the bad guy even though she's just trying to work hard to make sure all the children succeed. Though it's somewhat a typical family drama, I liked seeing them work together.

Links to Temptation: Yoyo Mung and Johnson Li are basically the only bright spots of this rather boring series. It's very hard to maintain a mystery for 20 episodes while keeping the storyline going so TVB needs to think of either making super short series or scrap that idea altogether. The characters are weird too. Steven basically lusts after Fala, but since she's keeping so many secrets, she keeps pushing him away or wanting to break up with him. This series did not appeal to me at all.

Lives of Omission: I was very entertained and intrigued watching this series but I also wouldn't say that it was great. I liked how it started with Michael joining the police again and that he kept his Laughing personality but then it gets a little ridiculous with him going undercover again. Why would the triads be so dumb to believe that he's still not a cop? I just thought that there wasn't enough development and there were many plot holes in this series. Did Damien really move on that quickly after the death of his wife? I wish they showed more of him and Elena interacting. Even though I can't quite give it a positive review, I would still recommend it since I think people would enjoy it.

Men With No Shadows: This was another series that they tried to stretch out a concept into 20 episodes and didn't work out. I thought that this was an interesting concept but the thought behind the series was better than the execution.

My Sister of Eternal Flower: There was a lot of criticism directed towards Charmaine's acting in this series but I don't think she did that bad of a job! She was very cute (in a ridiculous haircut) but I wish they delved deeper into how Raymond would handle being in a relationship with her. I also thought Toby did a great job in this series and had tremendous improvement this year with her roles. I wish she had been nominated for the Most Improved Actress award.

Only You: This was also one of my favorite series of the year. I liked the many different wedding stories that showed off a variety of relationships and how love conquers all. I was not a fan of one part of the ending since it was really tragic for such an uplifting series, but I also get why they did it.

Relic of an Emissary: I didn't care for this series at all and was barely paying attention to the plot, but then I also read reviews on how some people really liked it and how they thought that Joe was robbed of a Best Actor nomination. I have never been a fan of Joe's so that's probably another reason I didn't care for this series.

River of Wine: Pierre Ngo is so annoying in this series. He basically plays the same character he typically plays- someone who never learns his lesson and keeps doing bad things until he learns his lesson in the end. I thought that Sunny and Linda were very cute together and enjoyed watching their scenes.

Show Me The Happy: The cast makes the series look promising but it didn't utilize the cast like they should have. Overall, it wasn't very funny and at times, it was very boring.

Super Snoops: You will either find this super silly and over-the-top series really funny or think that this is complete crap. For me, I really liked it for the most part and found myself laughing at the stupidest things.

The Life and Times of A Sentinel: Overall, I liked this series and it had a very exciting and unexpected ending. Steven, Kenneth, Selena, Natalie, and Elaine did a good job.

The Other Truth: I think this series had good potential but did not really deliver. If this is a lawyer series, a lot of these cases are not really resolved in court and they seemed to take the easy way out in ending a case. For example, I thought the cop case was really intriguing and exciting and wanted to see how they would handle such a complicated case. I wanted to see Raymond not back down because he's a lawyer and believes in the law. Instead, they made the case silly by having the whole department corrupted except for the one undercover. I felt cheated. Also, there was also a case that revolved around the jurors which included Louis's mom. I liked that she didn't back down from what she believed in but isn't it illegal for her to go to the scene of the crime and test out her own theory. As a juror, she is supposed to judge based on the evidence presented in front of her, not by doing her own tests. The finale was also disappointing since they focused on Louis and Kristal, when most people probably wanted to see more Ruco, Tavia, and Raymond.

The Rippling Blossom: I loved this series. Chilam, Myolie, and Damien were all really funny and they make this series the best comedy of the year. Michael and Tavia's part were a little boring in comparison but I didn't mind the contrast between serious and funny.

Til Love Do Us Lie: (Not Official Poster) I'm only up to episode 25 but I really like this sitcom so far. My favorite episodes are the ones that revolve around Joyce Tang and Hanjin Tan.

Wax and Wane: There are only 2 reasons to watch this series. The first is Toby who plays one of the few likable characters in this series and the next is Roger. I've always thought that Roger was a really good actor who probably excelled mainly in comedic roles, but he did a fantastic job portraying all the dimensions of his character here. He shined even though the story was bad which also led to the low ratings. I hope they give more opportunities to Roger to play more complex characters because with a better storyline, he can get another Best Actor award!

When Heaven Burns: I only just started to watch this so my opinion may change when I get to the end. For now, I'll just say that Charmaine looks amazing in this series.

edit: Okay, so I just finished watching the series and the whole thing was pretty boring, but I thought the last episode was really great. I get the idea and themes that the series was trying to portray, but it was not well executed. Even though I think this series is trying to portray itself as something TVB has never done, I actually think it had a lot of classic TVB elements such as the theme of retribution and (spoiler alert!) someone trying to save someone just to fly really far and end up hitting their head with blood spurting out of their mouth before they die.

Yes, Sir. Sorry, Sir.: This series was not very good either. I hated the pairing of Moses and Tavia here (even though I loved them together in Moonlight Resonance), Ron was barely used in this series, and Linda didn't show up until later in the series. I think they should have utilized Ron and Linda more and the overall series was quite silly.

Wow, now that I finished all my reviews, I realized that I gave more negative reviews than positive. I enjoy watching TVB series in general so even if I didn't enjoy the overall series, there were probably moments that I did like. What series did you like or not like this year?

Wayne Lai taking pictures for a health ad

I have always liked Wayne, but he became one of my favorite actors when I saw him in The Gentle Crackdown 2. He basically stole the show and I have been rooting for him ever since. His popularity soared since starring in Rosy Business and No Regrets and got him back to back Best Actor wins for the TVB awards. Although Wayne has gotten many offers to film in mainland, he prefers to stay in Hong Kong because he doesn't want to be away from his son for too long. He also doesn't have to worry that much about money since he gets many endorsement deals, such as the one for the health ad below.

2011 Asian Television Awards

A few of TVB's stars are flying to Singapore for the Asian Television Awards. I believe that TVB is only allowed one entrant per category. Kevin Cheng (Ghetto Justice) is nominated for Best Actor (and he's against Bobby Au-Yeung for his China series- Ghost Catcher), Charmaine Sheh (Can't Buy Me Love) is nominated for Best Actress, Evergreen Mak (No Regrets) is nominated for Best Supporting Actor, and Fala Chen (No Regrets) is nominated for Best Supporting Actress. Good luck to all of them and I hope they all win!

Ron Ng Weibo Scandal

Ron Ng's rumored girlfriend, Viann Zhang sent out a picture of herself using Ron's Weibo. At that time, Ron was attending Toby Leung's wedding so it was obvious that he wasn't the one sending the picture. Viann has access to Ron's weibo account but did she do it on purpose to show off her relationship with him? It seems like she's quite eager to tell everyone about their relationship because she seems quite possessive and wants to make sure that other girls don't flirt with him. She was really catty towards Kate Tsui saying that her lips look like sausage just because she was having rumors with Ron, and I'm pretty sure she also deleted a lot of Ron's female friends from his weibo. Or do you think it was truly an accident and she forgot to switch back to her own account?

There is also a function for the filming of The Aristocratic Family and Ron was missing because he's "sick".

Congratulations to all the winners! Kevin and Myolie were the big winners with Kevin getting the fan-voted TVB.com Weibo/Popularity award and they both got the Best Actor/Actress awards as well as the Favorite Character awards. I would have thought they would only get one or the other, since I thought Michael and Linda/Fala would have grabbed the other. However, I guess it shouldn't come as that big of a surprise that they got all the awards since it is truly their year. In 2006, they both received a lot of negative feedback. Kevin got flack for getting the Best Actor award because people thought it was too soon and Myolie got criticized for her role in To Grow With Love, but they were both able to show that they are capable leading actors this year. Kevin's role in Ghetto Justice won a lot of fan support and he showed that he can play different types of characters and that momentum only continued when his other series started airing in China. Not only did his fanbase continue to grow, his salary continued to grow as well. This was also the year that Myolie was able to break through and got commended for the 3 series she had this year. She played 3 different roles well and was also able to bring in the ratings with her 3 series being in the top 5 rated series of the year. They were both able to gain a lot of their colleagues' support since many of them picked them as their choice for TVB King and Queen. To me, they deserved it.

I'm happy with Ben and Sharon's win since they both worked hard and it was quite touching to see them both so emotional. Although I had a different preference for the Most Improved Awards, MC Jin makes a lively host and Sire did have a great year, especially with her role in Curse of the Royal Harem. I just wish that Christine Ng and Louis Yuen won for their show!

If you are a fan of someone that didn't win, don't fret. Look on the bright side. Elena Kong was nominated for both Lead and Supporting Actress and she moved to the front row. Michael Tse has a movie coming up which will most likely do well in theaters. It's also obvious to me that they're trying to groom next year's fight to make it between Tavia, Linda, Kate, and Fala and I can imagine TVB wanting to give them each the Best Actress award in the coming years.

Curse of the Royal Harem Finale Event and Ratings

Curse of the Royal Harem had its finale promotional event the other night and some of their stars showed up such as Myolie Wu, Sunny Chan, Nancy Wu, Gigi Wong, Elena Kong, Vivian Yeo, Jess Sum, Sire Ma, Charmaine Li, KK Cheung, and Ben Wong. I really liked both Myolie and Nancy's dresses! So pretty!

The average ratings for the 2 hour finale was 39.4 with a peak of 43 points! It is the highest rated series for for the 8:30 timeslot in Hong Kong.

I thought the series as a whole was really great. The storyline made sense and everything happened for a reason. The acting was also superb and all the lead and supporting actors and characters had a time to shine. I would definitely recommend this series.
